Lip Filler Myths Debunked

If you’ve thought about getting lip fillers, you know that there can be a huge stigma surrounding this topic. Whether you bring up the idea to your friends, spouse, or significant other, they might make comments about how people with lip injections always look like they have “duck lips”. Well, Trish Hultgren MSN, FNP-C from Guerra Plastic Surgery Center in Scottsdale, Arizona is here to debunk five of the most common myths surrounding lip fillers.

You’ll Have ‘Kardashian’ Lips

This is one of Trish’s favorite myths to debunk! When a patient comes in nervous about having duck lips or lips like Kylie Jenner, they don’t realize how many syringes that it takes to achieve that look. One syringe of filler is approximately 1.0 mL which is equivalent to about ⅓ of a Hershey’s Kiss! So no, you will not have duck lips from one syringe of lip filler.

Lip Fillers Stretch Your Lips

One of the biggest worries that patients have is that their lips will look saggy or odd after their fillers dissolve. This is not even remotely true. We use fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane® that are hyaluronic acid-based. Hyaluronic Acid is a natural substance that already exists in our bodies, so gradually over time, your body’s enzymes will dissolve this molecule. As a result, your lips will not look stretched out by any means, but instead, lose volume slowly that hardly anyone will notice. When that time comes, book an appointment to see Trish for a touch-up!

Syringes Can Be Shared

This common misconception could result in a dangerous outcome. Filler syringes cannot be shared between patients, even if they are family or friends! Sharing syringes of filler can result in cross-contamination of bacteria or even the spread of potential diseases between patients. If a medical spa says this is okay, we would advise you to stay far away. This practice is actually an OSHA violation. Always make sure you do your research to find a reputable injector.

Lip Fillers Never Look Natural

Lip injections are a great way to combat signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth area. Some patients are afraid that they will look unnatural if they opt for lip fillers, and that is not the case with an experienced injector like Trish Hultgren MSN, FNP-C. As a seasoned and skilled injector, Trish places the filler ideally where it needs to go for producing the results each patient wishes to achieve.

You Won’t Have Any Bruising or Swelling

We wish we could make this guarantee, but everyone’s body reacts differently when they are getting lip fillers. The most common side effects after lip injections are swelling, redness, and a little bit of bruising. Don’t worry, there are a couple of different ways you can significantly reduce any of these symptoms.

Trish suggests avoiding medication like Aspirin, Advil®, Aleve®, Vitamin E, and fish oil one week prior to treatment. These can thin your blood which could result in even more bruising than normal. You are able to take Tylenol though to relieve any pain prior to your appointment. She also recommends to not drink any alcohol at least 24 hours before your appointment.

To help relieve any swelling or bruising after your treatment, make sure to stay hydrated and avoid salty foods. Make sure to apply Aquaphor® healing ointment for the first couple of days to make sure your lips heal properly. You can also apply a cool compress to reduce swelling.
