How It Works

Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Aldo Guerra, may remove the implants through the incisions from your last augmentation surgery, avoiding the need for incisions in other areas. This approach is more practicable if your previous surgeon placed your implants via an inframammary fold incision.

If your reason for undergoing breast implant removal surgery involves capsular contracture, a ruptured implant, or BIA-ALCL, our doctor may perform a capsule resection as well. It entails removing the hardened scar tissue around the affected implant and the implant itself.

Layers of dissolving sutures will close your incision wounds. Our surgeon may also place a layer of gauze or bandage over your breasts to expedite the healing process.

This procedure takes between 1 and 2 hours to complete, although it may take longer if more extensive work is necessary.

The Link Between BIA-ALCL and Breast Implants

Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma or blood cancer. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), women with textured implants by Allergan have a higher incidence rate of BIA-ALCL. This cancer occurs in the scar tissue enveloping each implant and can spread to nearby lymph nodes over time.

The symptoms of BIA-ALCL include chronic pain or swelling around the breast implants. Some patients may also notice a change in the appearance of their breasts. However, this disease is typically slow-growing, meaning it can lurk in your body for years without showing any signs or symptoms. MRI surveillance scans scheduled every three years can assess implant integrity, identify any masses in the capsule, and check for fluid around the implants.

BIA-ALCL treatment involves surgically removing the tumor, capsule, and implants. In severe cases, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy may be necessary.
