Many people choose rhinoplasty to change how their nose looks or to correct functional issues, such as breathing difficulties caused by a deviated septum or past injury. When performed with care and expertise, rhinoplasty enhances facial harmony while improving how you breathe and how you feel about yourself. At Guerra Plastic Surgery Center, we have a double board-certified plastic surgeon, Jonathan Dang, MD, who specializes in rhinoplasty, bringing years of focused experience and artistic precision to every procedure.
Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes and restructures the nose to improve both its appearance and function. It can address a wide range of concerns, including dorsal humps, septal deviation, nasal asymmetry, tip irregularities, and airway obstruction. The underlying bone, cartilage, and soft tissue are carefully adjusted to achieve a natural-looking result and enhance nasal function.
Rhinoplasty can enhance both the appearance and function of the nose with results tailored to your unique facial features. Benefits may include:
Most healthy adults who are unhappy with the appearance or function of their nose may be good candidates for rhinoplasty. Ideal patients have clear goals and realistic expectations and focus on improvement rather than perfection.
You may be a good candidate if you:
Important considerations:
Rhinoplasty in Scottsdale is a highly individualized procedure. At Guerra Plastic Surgery Center, it is performed under general anesthesia using an open approach, which allows much better visualization and control, especially when refining the nasal tip or making structural adjustments.
During your consultation, advanced imaging and reference photos may be used to understand your goals better and align expectations. Every surgical plan is customized based on your anatomy, skin type, and desired outcome.
The procedure begins with a small, carefully placed incision at the base of the nose, allowing the skin to be gently lifted to have full access to the underlying structures. From there, the bone and cartilage are reshaped to achieve the desired contour and improve function.
Depending on your needs, this may include smoothing a dorsal hump, refining the nasal tip, straightening the septum, or reducing nostril width. Structural grafts may also be used to support and enhance the final shape of the nose. Once the necessary adjustments are made, the incisions are closed, and internal and external splints are placed to support the nose during the initial healing phase.
Patients with lower nasal bridges or thicker skin may benefit from dorsal augmentation to create balance and definition. This can be achieved using rib cartilage, which is often considered the gold standard for its strength and durability. Donor cartilage provides a reliable alternative for patients who prefer to avoid a secondary incision.
Skin thickness is addressed conservatively to ensure proper healing, with subtle adjustments beneath the skin helping to enhance definition while maintaining a smooth, natural contour.

Recovery after rhinoplasty is a gradual process, and understanding what to expect can help patients feel more confident and prepared.
Most patients have splints and sutures removed about one week after surgery. During this time, it’s normal to notice some drainage from the nose as part of the healing process. Swelling generally peaks around 1–2 weeks, with the tip of the nose taking the longest to fully settle. Subtle changes may continue for up to a year. In the case of revision rhinoplasty, swelling and settling may take up to two years.
Scars at the columella typically heal very well and become minimally noticeable over time. Many patients notice an initial adjustment period in the first few weeks, which may include moments of uncertainty or mild regret as they get used to their new appearance. This is normal, and most patients report increased satisfaction and confidence once they fully adjust to their refined nasal shape.

Rhinoplasty typically takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on how complex the case is. The exact duration varies based on your anatomy and the surgical techniques required.
Rhinoplasty is generally not very painful. Most patients experience mild discomfort, congestion, or pressure. Any discomfort is usually well controlled with medication and improves within the first week.
Swelling and bruising are most noticeable during the first 1 to 2 weeks, with significant improvement after that. Final results develop gradually, with subtle swelling, especially at the tip, resolving over up to a year.
You should sleep on your back with your head elevated for the first 1 to 2 weeks to reduce swelling and protect your nose. Sleeping on your side is usually safe after 3 to 4 weeks, once initial healing has progressed.
Scars are minimal and typically well-concealed, even with the open approach. The small incision at the columella usually heals very well and becomes barely noticeable over time.
